The Elder Scrolls Online Announced

In a press release yesterday, Zenimax Studios (the parent company of Bethesda Games) officially announced that The Elder Scrolls Online, a new MMORPG, will be released for PC and Mac some time next year. The game is being spear-headed by director Matt Firor.

“We have been working hard to create an online world in which players will be able to experience the epic Elder Scrolls universe with their friends, something fans have long said they wanted,” said Matt Firor, game director of The Elder Scrolls Online. “It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years. The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise.”

More information is set to be revealed in the June issue of Game Informer magazine, but information has slowly been leaking out before the issue hits newsstands. According to the leaks, The Elder Scrolls Online will be set a 1,000 years before the events of Skyrim, and will allow players to journey across all of Tamriel. However, certain areas of the game will initially be inaccessible, as they are being saved for future DLC expansions. The game supposedly takes place during a time period when the Daedric Prince Molag Bal is waging war on the lands of Tamriel.

As far as actual gameplay goes, Elder Scrolls Online will be played in the third-person perspective and utilize a hotbar and attack re-charge system similar to World of Warcraft’s. The game is also said to sport three different player factions, each represented by either a lion, dragon, or eagle, as well as up to 100v100 PvP combat. The coolest feature of the game to have leaked so far has to be that whichever of the three factions is currently controlling the Imperial City will be able to select the Emperor from amongst its own members!

Hopefully Bethesda and Zenimax will be able to deliver an MMO able to de-throne the decade long king, World of Warcraft; only time will tell. Look for more details to be released about the game at E3 this June.
